An Assessment of the Profitability of an Electric Car Compared to a Petrol-powered Car

Witold Szymaniak

Abstract

The article deals with the problem of the profitability of purchasing and operating an electric car in comparison with a petrol-powered counterpart. The author proposes a practical, 5-step profitability assessment model, which accounts for the value of money over time and is based on life cycle costing from the consumer's perspective. The results indicate that an electric car is not profitable compared to a petrol counterpart. An estimate is also provided of the maximum price at which an electric car would be profitable.
