An Analysis of the Correlation between Stock Price Volatility and the Assessment of the Financial Position of Selectedpublicly Traded Companies

Agnieszka Chmielewska

Abstract

The aim of the article is to assess the financial position of selected publicly traded companies operating in the IT, real estate and construction sectors for 2016-2018 and to examine the correlation between fluctuations in their stock prices and a synthetic assessment of their financial position. It was hypothesised that better synthetic assessments would be correlated with less stock price volatility and higher rates of return. The analysis was conducted for each sector separately as well as for the entire target population in order to determine whether such a correlation exists in general or can only be observed within a given sector. It was also hypothesised that the observed correlation in each case was at a similar level and its strength did not depend on the sector, since differences that exist between the sectors were eliminated by the synthetic assessment.
