Abstract

The article examines the relationship between the credit portfolio structure in a given country and its banking system model. In the historical development of banking, two main models of corporate governance have emerged: the Anglo-Saxon and the continental model. The Anglo-Saxon model exhibits a preference for specialized banking, with banks typically focusing on strictly defined areas of activity. In contrast, the continental model aims at providing universal services, where commercial and investment banking are not separated. 6 countries were analyzed in the comparative study: the United States, United Kingdom, and Canada, representing the Anglo-Saxon model, and Germany, Japan, and Poland representing the continental model. It was found that proportions of different categories of loans in the credit portfolio depend on which banking system is used in a given country. (original abstract)
