Character of foreign direct investment in Colombia and Ecuador

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to characterize foreign direct investment (FDI) in Colombia and Ecuador. The study presents a comparative analysis of the size of FDI in each country, the relation of FDI to its GDP and gross fixed capital formation (GFCF), and the structure of FDI in terms of industry and geographical location in the period 2007-2020. The analysis also takes into account indicators of competitiveness and investment attractiveness, i.e. GCI, EFW, BTI, GFICA in 2007 and 2019. It was found that in 2020 a large part of FDI came from North America: in the case of Colombia mainly from the United States and in the case of Ecuador mainly from Canada. In the reference period, the share of FDI in national accounts (GDP and GFCF) remained much higher in Colombia than in Ecuador. Major investment projects in both markets were concentrated in the mining industry. The article may be an important reference for further research on investment attractiveness of selected developing countries.
