The Relationship Between Ego States in Transactional Analysis Theory and the Level of Perceived Trust in Managers from the Perspective of Their Subordinates

Abstract

The dynamically changing labour market requires managers to seek more effective ways of managing interpersonal relationships within organizations. This article presents findings of a study aimed to determine whether there is a connection between the level of trust subordinates feel toward their managers and the Ego States (a construct derived from Transactional Analysis) in which these managers operate. The research utilized the Trust in Supervisor Scale developed by Marcin Wnuk and a self-designed questionnaire to assess respondents' Ego States. The results confirmed the existence of a relationship between managers' Ego States and the level of trust felt by employees. Trust correlated most strongly with the Nurturing Parent state (0.659), followed by the Free Child state (0.589), and then the Adult state (0.574). This observed relationship may result from the interaction of various sociological, psychological, biological, environmental, cultural, and economic factors.
