The relationship between transfers, sporting performance and financial condition and stock market valuation of selected European football clubs

Abstract
The aim of this article is to examine the relationship between sporting performance and the transfer policy of football clubs as key factors shaping their operational functioning and their economic and financial situation, reflected in financial condition and stock market valuations of selected European football clubs. The analysis is embedded in the contemporary context of professional football, where sporting success on the pitch is increasingly linked to financial outcomes.
The study covers five European football clubs listed on public stock markets, enabling an empirical assessment of market mechanisms influencing valuation dynamics. Statistical analysis based on correlation and regression methods, supported by an author’s expert index of sporting performance, indicates positive relationships between sporting success and stock price movements. However, the strength and nature of these relationships differ across the analyzed clubs, suggesting a differentiated and context-dependent impact of sporting outcomes on market valuation in modern European professional football markets today.
