Visitor Differences by Residence and Trip Purpose: Evidence from Museums and Galleries in Slovakia

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse differences among visitor segments defined by visitors’ place of residence and whether visiting a museum or gallery was the primary purpose of the trip. A questionnaire survey was used to collect information from 1376 respondents who have visited 79 museums and galleries in Slovakia. Responses from different visitor segments were compared using descriptive statistics, Pearson’s chi-square test, the Kruskal–Wallis test, and Importance–Performance Analysis (IPA). Results: Statistically significant differences were identified in visitor characteristics, evaluations of selected museum and gallery attributes, overall satisfaction, and behavioural intentions. Despite these differences, IPA revealed similar strategic priorities across all visitor segments. The findings support visitor-centred management and strategic decision-making by demonstrating that supplementary services should be tailored to different visitor segments while maintaining the quality of core museum and gallery attributes.
