The Forgotten Country of the Drevani of Polabians

Marek Tabert

Abstract

We may observe an increasing interest in tourism connected with a passion for history or nature. This interest is cultivated as an activity satisfying tourists' passion to learn. The paper discusses the history as well as tourist values of a region of the Drevani (German "Wendland", Polish "Drzewianie"), located in Lower Saxony, Germany. It is the area of former Slavic tribes of the Polabians, in Poland practically unknown as a tourist attraction. The publication shows that the Wendland region is worthy of tourist exploration. From the north and west it is surrounded by a protected area - Lüneburger Heide, with a reserve and a nature park of Südheide. From the east, the reserve of biosphere "Niedersächsische Elbtalaue" extends along the Elbe . The central part of the country 82 with numerous villages is also full of charm. These villages have preserved the unique arrangement of houses, which is the Slavic spatial planning solution.(original abstract)
