Abstract

The article addresses the problem of tourist mobility in valuable natural habitats. The main goal of the study was to identify an innovation with the greatest potential for improving tourist mobility in the Białowieża Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To answer this question, a random sample of 421 tourists taking their vacations in the Białowieża Forest were surveyed in 2019-2021 using the CAWI and PAPI method. Respondents could choose to complete the survey on their own by accessing an online questionnaire using a QR code or answer the interviewer’s questions. After a pilot survey carried out in August 2019, the actual data collection took place in September and October 2019, from May to June 2020, and in January 2021. According to the respondents, the introduction of a single travel card valid for all means of transport would be the most desirable way of improving accessibility of remote parts of the forest. As regards the other proposed innovations, a system of e-bicycles with an accompanying app was positively assessed by a considerable percentage of respondents. It would indeed be a real novelty in the region. The results of the study indicate current needs of the tourism market in the region and set priority directions for entrepreneurs and local authorities regarding transport investment plans.
