The Significance of Capital Requirements Directive IV for the Evolution of Prudential Regulations in the European Union

Łukasz Szewczyk

Abstract

The global financial crisis has unveiled the weaknesses of the regulatory framework, which was supposed to ensure stability of the banking sector, in the European Union. Regulatory changes concerning financial institutions have developed into a set of regulations specifying capital requirements and risk management standards referred to as Basel III. The Capital Requirements Directive (CRD) IV represents a transposition of these norms into Community law. This paper intends to discuss the regulations that the CRD is to introduce, as well as their implications for the stability of the EU banking sector.(original abstract)
