Social Costs of System Transformation in Poland in 1989-2009

Mirosław Bochenek

Abstract

The article presents a short characteristic of phenomena which have accompanied the process of Polish economy transformation. The discussion involves the most costly and socially difficult phenomena such as: mass unemployment, the growth in poverty scale (particularly affecting children), excessive income and wealth disproportions, the increase in the number of suicides resulting with death and the increase of the homeless number. Their occurrence indicates that transformation process should not be perceived only as a huge success. (original abstract)
