Water Elements in the Recreational System of the City of Poznan

Magdalena Szczepańska

Abstract

The aim of the paper was to estimate the condition and analyze the distribution as well as availability of some chosen water elements (rivers, flows, lakes, artificial water bodies, ponds, swimming pools, fountains) for the recreational function of the city of Poznan. Water affects the comfort of life including the quality of leisure and recreation. Surface water as well as its surrounding flora tremendously increase the variety and diversity of habitat conditions. Moreover, they are a unique element of the city's climate. The water elements also have a great decorative value in the composition of the city. The convenient landform features of Poznan and its suburbs make it the city of a great potential for development. However, the tourist development plan of the Warta valley urgently needs specific yet not aggressive activities. A strong pressure of tourism may cause degradation of the surface water, especially in the western greenery area. Therefore, there is the need for making new areas as well as sports and recreation facilities. The carried out analysis of the availability of swimming pools proves that the present offer in the city of Poznan is unsatisfactory.(original abstract)
