Using new media to build customer relationships in the hospitality industry

Abstract

The purpose of the study described in the article is to determine which new media tools are used by hotels to build relationships with their clients and to identify specific purposes they are used for. The study is based on data collected in an online questionnaire survey conducted among representatives of hotels affiliated with the Chamber of Commerce of the Polish Hotel Industry (IGHP). The results indicate two main areas in which new media are used for building relationships with clients. Tools such as company websites, e-mail, social networking sites, and CRM software are mainly used for the purpose of product personalization and promotion.
Other types of new media, like blogs, podcasts, and internet forums are also used, though not as intensively, to build brand communities and involve customers in the development of marketing strategies by exploiting their creative potential. It can therefore be assumed that the hotel sector will continue to rely on modern interactive digital technologies to develop relationships with customers.
