Networking in the Creation and Development of Polish Academic Spinoff Companies - Preliminary Results of Qualitative Research

Witold Nowiński

Abstract

This study highlights the role of networking for the development of new ventures, in particular academic spinoffs. Qualitative research of three Polish spinoffs, using case-study methodology and think-aloud-protocol, links precocity and intensity of networking with the founders' involvement in day-to-day management, as well as, the type of knowledge transferred to the spinoff. The founder academic's involvement in spinoff management seems to be linked with earlier networking, however it also seems to decrease the willingness to share control over their companies in return for acquiring resources. In turn networking with external commercial entities seems to occur earlier in the case of spinoffs based on founders' knowledge rather than radical research discoveries.(original abstract)
