Abstract

The main objective of the article is to show the optimum methods (ways) of reducing the budget imbalance in the conditions of economic crises. The difficulty in selecting the right methods of restoring fiscal balance under crisis conditions consists in that too drastic cuts in some categories of public spending or substantial tax increases may be procyclic and conducive to an even greater weakening of the economic situation, which may consequently lead by way of a vicious circle - to a growing public debt, which would result in the need for increasingly great fiscal retrenchment in the future. The research covers selected economic recessions which have occurred in the period of 1990-2011 in 23 countries.(original abstract)
