The Impact of the Financial Crisis on the Operations of Special Economic Zones (Local Business Environment Impacts)

Andrzej Paczoski

Abstract

The economic crisis was caused by several negative phenomena and has had a marked impact on regional and local economies. The key adverse factors arising from the crisis include: declining business activity, bankruptcies, diminishing investments (specifically greenfield investments), a decrease in regional and local budget revenues from taxes and from central government subsidies. The effects of the crisis are epitomized by a reduction of scheduled development projects in Polish special economic zones (relative to 2007). These negative effects may be overcome through a combination of measures based on relevant regional development concepts.(original abstract)
