Keywords in the Internet

Wiesław Babik

Abstract

The Internet is a new field of keyword utilization. Primarily, free keywords have been applied there both in indexing (intellectual and automatic) and information retrieval. This paper presents the nature of the Internet language and various ways of using and functioning of keywords in the Internet. In the light of the literature on the subject, the "nature" of the Internet language is controversial. A thesis has been assumed that basically a natural language is used in the indexing and retrieval functions. The assumption of that thesis has serious methodological consequences. In the extreme case, it can be associated in fact with the "annihilation" of language. The author discusses basic principles of retrieval practice, using keywords, as well as information and linguistic systemic tools (programmes and structures) that support the respective processes.
