Pragmatic Principles of National Library of Poland Subject Headings and Universal Decimal Classification in Relation to Gricean Conversational Maxims

Abstract

The philosopher Herbert Paul Grice proposed four conversational maxims that arise from the pragmatics of natural language. In this paper there were presented four conversational maxims: maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, maxim of manner. Then, there were distinguished and described pragmatic principles of National Library of Poland Subject Headings and Universal Decimal Classification. Finally, there were analyze pragmatic principles of National Library of Poland Subject Headings and Universal Decimal Classification in relation to Gricean conversational maxims. (original abstract)
