Co-Operative Banking Sector in Poland

Abstract
As a result of economic transformation, Polish banking sector went through very deep reform between the 80's and the 90's. This was applied to co-operative banks as well. The process of economic transformation showed majority of weaknesses of this segment of banking sector. Thanks to introduced reforms on the market appeared institutions which found their niche in the strongly competitive financial environment. Nowadays the co-operative banks compete successfully with the banks. The article describes crucial points in the process of transformation of co-operative banking sector. Simultaneously it presents the comparison of results of this banking sector to the results achieved by the commercial banking sector between 2004 and the 3rd quarter of 2009 and it predicts directions of further development.
