The Financial Standing of the Social Insurance Fund following Poland's Pension System Reform

Bożena Kołosowska

Abstract

An evaluation of the current standing of the Social Insurance Fund justifies the statement that its own revenues (from social security contributions) will not allow it to maintain financial liquidity. As a result, the Fund continues to incur liabilities attributable to bank loans which are used to finance its deficit. The Fund's debt toward banks has been growing steadily over the years, and projections into its future financial condition show that the pension fund will run the highest deficit, approximating 20 bn zloty, in the years 2007-2008. Remedying the crisis will involve financial support from the state budget as well as from the Demographic Reserve Fund. (original abstract)
