Economic and Financial Crisis in the Global Perspective : EU Role in the International Coordination of the Anty-crisis Measures

Abstract
The main tasks of the article are twofold. First is the analysis of the economic and financial crisis of the years 2007-2009, its roots, causes, effects and the critical assessment of measures undertaken in order to overcome its main consequences i.e. recession and unemployment. Second part of the article aims at answering the question of adequacy of the current design of the international financial architecture (IMF, BIS, World Bank). The ability of different countries and international groupings - mainly European Union - to face the challenge, to resolve the problems in question and to coordinate the policies has been assessed. De Larosière Report on the reforms to be implemented by the UE and in the global perspective by G-20 and other countries has been presented. The need to strengthen the surveillance over the financial institutions, to implement capital adequacy ratios (Bazel II), to limit moral hazard and to enforce proper monitoring and control mechanisms has been stressed.
