The Origin, Trajectory and Consequences of the Debt Crisis in Greece

Anna Berlińska

Abstract

The first decade of the 21st century will be remembered in history as the beginning of a severe economic crisis epitomized by spectacular collapses of financial moguls and looming bankruptcy of European states. How severe and profound the financial and economic turbulence was is perhaps best illustrated by the disastrous condition of Greeces economy, posing a real threat to the stability of European markets, and providing a focal point for the ongoing debate over the mechanisms that led to the debt crisis in the Euro area. This paper aims to trace the causes and describe the trajectory of the crisis in Greeces public finances as well as its repercussions for the European structures, including the Euro area in particular.(original abstract)
