Poland 1989-2009 vs. 1918-1939 : a Comparison of Statism in both Economic Periods

Piotr Wiśniewski

Abstract

An interesting aspect of reform undertaken in Poland during the past two decades (1989-2009) is comparing the extent of statism with that interwar Poland (1918-1939), an equally long albeit completely different era (e.g. in geopolitical terms). With numerous caveats (related to the comprehensiveness and comparability of available data) one can plausibly argue that the scale of direct state control over the economy of interwar Poland had been lower than it was in the past 20 years. This fact should provide a source of inspiration for contemporary economic policy theoreticians and practitioners in Poland.(original abstract)
