Economic Transformation - a New Definition of an Entrepreneur

Krzysztof Gołata

Abstract

In centrally planned economy the notion "private entrepreneur", defining a person owning its own business was of pejorative character. Socialist slate tolerated a craftsman living from his work; however, it treated him as an element completing socialist economy. Economic transformation gave back to the notion "private entrepreneur" the proper meaning: a person who is not only an owner but also an employer. The article focuses on the problems connected with the origins of this term in Polish reality, particularly during the first years of transformation. There is a quite common opinion that negative opinions about Polish entrepreneurs have their source in socialist economy and the beginnings of transformation.(original abstract)
