Hidden identities away: An analysis of non-binary gender characters’ pronoun translations in selected English-language media

Abstract

This article presents a collection of data on translating gender-neutral language used when speaking about non-binary characters in English-language media into Polish. Based on 30 translations from various types of media (such as games, television shows, or books), a mixed study was carried out, combining quantitative research in the form of tables and charts with qualitative research, additionally analysing the context of the process of creating some of the translations, and including an interview with two members of the “Neutral Language Council” (Rada Języka Neutralnego) collective formed around the zaimki.pl website, which is a leading source of linguistic wisdom for non-binary people in Poland and beyond. The media analysis is divided according to media categories. It mainly discusses cases that stand out in some way or are cited as an example of a phenomenon observed in translations within a given category. The graphs show the data of translations in the “tv show” category due to containing the most characters, the data of all translations sorted by media category and a common pie chart. The interview was conducted through an email exchange. The entire article concludes with a summary of the strategies observed and an opinion on them.
