Remarks on the Concept and Essence of a Family Business

Abstract

Family businesses are a specific group of entities in the modern economy. They combine the world of business with the family sphere in a great variety of forms. However, all of them share the family aspect, which is differently related to the business activity they conduct. The author discusses these issues and uses theoretical concepts from the field of management and psychology in an attempt to identify competencies required from successors to run a family business. Family businesses, like other businesses in the market economy, develop by implementing their own strategies. They should take into account general and specialized knowledge, a specific business idea, as well as activities that effectively support the idea and its implementation.(original abstract)
