Maria Majewska

Urszula Szulczyńska

Abstract

The first aim of this article is to discuss knowledge creation as the basic process of knowledge management in an enterprise. The second objective is to present results of a survey of 260 enterprises concerning their preferred methods and practices of creating knowledge. The starting point for the article is the definition of knowledge creation according to principles set out by two schools of knowledge management: the process approach and the Japanese approach. Under these two approaches, the process of knowledge creation includes such activities as knowledge acquisition and development. The survey results indicate that the frequency with which companies apply methods and practices to create knowledge increases with their size, and is associated with the involvement of foreign capital and their expansion into foreign markets. Based on the respondents' answers, it is possible to evaluate the perceived usefulness of methods and practices of knowledge creation.(original abstract)
