Crumbs of Knowledge - Causal Ambiguity in Business Network Research

Wojciech Czakon

Abstract

This paper explores the issue of causality and causal ambiguity, in particular, within the field of management. In order to outline it, imitation and a resource based view of the firm's perspectives are adopted. Next, three research challenges are discussed: causality, determinism, and explicitness. To substantiate the crumbs of knowledge metaphor in business network research, a systematic literature review is deployed. The study shows 12 various categories used in prior research to address network antecedents. It also identifies 881 relationships between antecedents and dependent variables. In conclusions two ways to cope with causal ambiguity are outlined: semantic analysis and theorizing.(original abstract)
