The Financial and Economic Crisis and Its Influence on the Unequal Distribution of Income in Poland

Robert Oprych

Abstract

This paper presents the findings of an inquiry into the unequal distribution of employee income in Poland, in a historical perspective with a special focus on its levels during global economic crises. The study was concerned with the distribution of employee income in selected economy sectors between 1956 and 2010, based on aggregated data available from Statistical Yearbooks published by the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS). The following metrics were applied to determine the distribution of employee pay: quantile-based indicators of relative differences in pay and income, the Hungarian income inequality measures (Éltető-Frigyes indices), the standardized Hungarian inequality measures, and the Gini concentration coefficient. In addition, the Lorenz curve was employed to capture disparities in distribution.(original abstract)
