Accessibility of Nordic Walking Trails Regardless of the Season: Adaptation of the Signage System

Abstract

The aim of this study was to develop and test a trail signage system for Nordic walking  routes adapted to the needs of older adults and people with visual impairments. The Inclusive Design Evaluation and Assessment (IDEA) Audit was applied as a methodological framework, enabling iterative design and accessibility assessment. 136 participants, including seniors, visually impaired individuals, and non-impaired walkers participated in five research cycles involving tests of color preferences for trail signs, field tests of new sign prototypes, computer simulations of autumn conditions, and field tests in autumn conditions. Findings revealed that the traditional yellow signs were insufficient in autumn conditions, while the addition of a light-blue border significantly improved visibility, legibility, and spatial orientation. Participants emphasized enhanced safety and confidence while navigating the trails. The proposed solution has a potential to serve as a nationwide standard and support the development of active tourism and social inclusion. It is already being implemented on selected trails in the Lower Silesia region of Poland.
