The Significance of International Regulations in the Functioning of Deposit Guarantee Schemes

Łukasz Szewczyk

Abstract

Deposit guarantee schemes constitute a central element of the financial safety net. The recent global financial crisis has drawn the attention of economists to some vital concerns that need to be addressed with changes to the legal framework of deposit insurance. These changes appear particularly important in the context of the ongoing debate over the alleged over-regulation of the financial sector, the risks arising from the operation of these systems, and their significance to financial stability worldwide. This paper is devoted to presenting the new regulations on the operation of deposit guarantee schemes, designed to warrant the effective performance of their essential functions.(original abstract)
