Economic Policy as an Object of Party Competition in Poland - an Analysis of the 2011 Election Programs

Abstract
In any state, economic policy is a fundamental area of the government's responsibility. Its goals and measures will bear on the economic condition of the state and its position in international competition. Economic policy is pursued by constitutionally appointed officials whose power is - in any modern democratic state - legitimized through popular elections. In the elections, the sovereign, i.e. the citizen, votes on the political option of their choice. Arguably, the contemporary political scene is monopolized by political parties that will lure the electorate with smartly designed political programs. Formally, nevertheless, future economic policy goals and instruments are decided by citizens who give their votes to specific political groupings adhering to specific policy options. For the decision to be fully conscious and rational, it must be based on some reliable knowledge. The author aims to examine economic policy agendas included in the electoral programs of Polish political parties during the 2011 parliamentary election campaign. The following are some of the specific questions brought up by the research: Does economic policy represent an important area for Polish political parties? What information on their projected economic initiatives can be sourced from their political programs? Is it likely that they will make rational decisions on the government's future economic policy?(original abstract)Keywords:
