EU Banks at a Time of Economic Slowdown

Abstract
Financial markets throughout the world were affected by the eruption and the quick advances of the global financial crisis. Particularly banks have had to cope with new and difficult market conditions. The banking industry landscape has been transforming. Some banks have discontinued operation and vanished from the international finance stage, while some others have become state-owned. At the national as well as international level, steps have been instituted aiming to implement more stringent banking regulations, to increase capacity for government intervention in the activities of banks and to strengthen their equity capital. The paper seeks to identify the trend of change in the European banking. (original abstract)Keywords:
