Globalisation of the German Banking?

Ilona Romiszewska

Abstract

The subject of the thesis includes selected aspects of globalisation of German banks' operation, both in the institutional context (i.e. international development of branches and subsidiaries) and in the context of development of banking operations performed by a parent undertaking for non-residents located outside the German border (cross frontier activity). The analysis of balance sheets of banks shows that starting from the early seventies of the 20th century the operations of this kind have concentrated on the international market and have been mainly performed in the European financial centres (London, Luxembourg) therefore one should rather speak of Europeanization of German credit institutions. However, it should be emphasised that in the nineties of the 20th century an interest in the American market also increased. Globalisation resulted in the development of the banking industry on the scale unknown before. However, as the subprime crisis showed, at the same time it forces management boards of German banks to develop a new approach to management, especially in the field of credit and operational risks.
