Raising and Equalizing Retirement Age - An Opportunity or Threat to Women?

Łukasz Wawrowski

Abstract

As a result of the economic crisis, a number of countries have undertaken pension system reforms. The changes are supposed to, primarily, improve the systems' current performance, but also maximize future payments. Naturally, the crisis in itself was just the last straw that broke camel's back, while the inefficiency of existing systems have more much fundamental reasons. This is the case of Poland as well, where the pension issue has fuelled the political debate in the last several months. One of the key aspects of pension reforms is whether their impact on men's and women's pensions should be neutral or gender dependent. This dilemma is at the core of feminist economics and the strategy of gender mainstreaming. The discussion aims to address the question of whether, in the context of the so called gender equality, the retirement age should or should not be raised and whether it should be equal for men and women.(original abstract)
