The impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the operations of SME enterprises

Abstract

The purpose of the article is to discuss the role of the SME sector, the impact of the pandemic on business, to present financial assistance programs and their evaluation by businesses. The theoretical part uses a descriptive method with reference to legal acts and statistical data from official websites and reports. The research part presents the results of the survey conducted and the conclusions drawn from it. The micro, small and medium-sized enterprise sector is of great importance to the state's economy. It is influenced by the number of registered companies, contribution to gross domestic product and jobs created. In 2020, after the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, the sector faced new challenges that required state support. Numerous financial assistance programs were launched to help the sector survive this difficult period. According to the survey, the support should be evaluated positively. Without it, many companies may not have survived the pandemic period or may have suffered heavy losses. The result would have been an increase in unemployment and a decrease in GDP, in the creation of which the SME sector has a large share.
