Literary translation as specialist translation: a contrastive analysis of the Polish translation of neologisms in Frank Herbert's novel Dune

Abstract

Frank Herbert’s novel Dune, which belongs to the canon of contemporary science fiction literature, is rich in neologisms that not only shape the unique image of the depicted world but also carry important cognitive meanings. The objective of this paper is to analyse the linguistic characteristics of these neologisms, demonstrating the process of their creation and examining how they have been translated into Polish. The analysis will focus on the linguistic aspects as well as on the challenges faced by the translator, particularly in the context of preserving the original cultural and semantic meaning in translation.
