Abstract

The Lithuanian Energy Independence Strategy is overviewed in this article in the context of European integration, as well as, Europeanization. Stated and discussed within the article are the following topics: the implementation of the Third Energy Package; energy competitiveness and sustainability; the integration of the regional electricity market through electricity grid connections with Poland and Sweden, as well as, the interconnection with the Continental European network for synchronous operation; the diversification of energy (sources) supply through the new LNG terminal; the potential of building a new nuclear power plant in Visaginas; and the exploitation of renewable energy. As the government is quite sceptical on the latter issues, the progress in this field only really occurs due to the conditions and obligations imposed by the European Union (EU).(original abstract)
