Sport Events as a Part of the Urban Marketing Strategy in the Context of Contemporary Trends in the Market for Sports and Recreation

Abstract

The main purpose of the paper is to present the possibility of using sporting events as part of the marketing strategy of the city in the context of contemporary trends in the market for sports and recreation. It is hypothesized that the organization of sporting events can help local authorities achieve a better, long-term, competitive position, and create the city brand. The first part of the article consists of a theoretical part, which presents the nature and types of sporting events, and indentifies the impact of current trends in sport & recreation for the development of sporting events in cities. In the second part of the paper, a case study of three selected urban areas is presented: Poznan, Wroclaw, and Warsaw. It was concluded that sporting events are an important part of the process of building the city brand, based on sport. As a result, Poznan, Wroclaw, and Warsaw have different development strategies for sport and different images of each city.(original abstract)
