Financing of Deposit Guarantee Schemes across the European Union - Lessons to Learn from the Crisis

Abstract
This article sets out to analyze the funding mechanism laid down in the recent proposal for a directive of European Parliament and of the Council on deposit guarantee schemes. The analysis employs financial data from selected banks operating in the European Union. The author puts forth the following research hypothesis: in the case of deposit guarantee schemes, a financing mechanism based on the risk incurred, assuming the use of multiple financial indicators for risk assessment, is more appropriate than a model using a single indicator.(original abstract)Keywords:
