Impact of Economic Crisis on Municipalities' Own Revenues

Marek Czyż

Abstract

The article attempts to identify the main macroeconomic factors influencing the development of the municipalities' own revenues and also to identify the items that are particularly sensitive to economic trends. Analysis of local governments' own revenues is important because they are regarded as the most important to the financial independence of municipalities and thus essential to the municipalities being able to perform public duties. It was shown that the municipalities' own revenues are highly sensitive to the macroeconomic situation. This study indicated a strong positive relationship between the dynamics of income and changes in GDP. Municipalities are not resistant to changing external factors, particularly those causing economic crises.(original abstract)
