Suburbanization Process as a Factor of Sustainable Development — Economic Growth through Suburbanization

Abstract

The article examines suburbanization as a driver of sustainable socio-economic
development. The authors analyze the migration of populations from large urban centers to
suburban and rural areas, emphasizing its multidimensional impact on economic growth,
spatial organization, and environmental balance. Drawing on literature review and research
conducted at the Warsaw School of Economics (2020), the paper discusses spatial development
theories (Perroux, Hirschman, Wallerstein, Harris & Ullman, Christaller, Lösch) to
contextualize the relationship between growth poles, functional urban areas, and sustainable
development. The authors argue that suburbanization supports sustainability by promoting
eco-friendly lifestyles, renewable energy use, and decentralized economic activity.
Moreover, the COVID-19 pandemic intensified these processes, demonstrating a growing
preference for peripheral living. Ultimately, suburbanization is presented as a mechanism
for balancing economic, spatial, and environmental development
