CHANGES IN THE SPATIAL AND COMMODITY STRUCTURE OF UKRAINE’S EXPORTS

OKSANA PROTSEVIAT

Abstract

The aim of this article is to analyse the specific features of transformational processes in the commodity and geographical structure of Ukrainian exports under the conditions of full-scale armed conflict. The research methods are based on a systemic, structural-functional and comparative approach, enabling a comprehensive assessment of changes in Ukraine’s foreign trade at the macro- and mesoregional levels. The results of the analysis indicate a decline in the share of goods exports in Ukraine’s GDP structure in 2021–2023 and a partial recovery in 2024. Deep structural disruptions caused by reduced demand, infrastructure destruction and logistical disturbances have been identified. The high share of agri-food exports persists, while exports of mineral and metallurgical products are decreasing, and the chemical sector shows signs of recovery. In the geographical export structure, a shift in activity towards western and capital regions has been observed, along with the marginalisation of southern and eastern regions. Romania has gained importance as an alternative logistics partner, and the share of exports to EU countries—especially Poland, Spain, and Germany—has increased. The conclusions highlight the need to shift from raw material exports to technological exports and the necessity of institutional support for long-term structural transformation. The development of new, resilient export directions is considered a key element in Ukraine’s post-war economic recovery.
