On the Concept of "Competence" as a Basis for Human Resource Management and Four Meanings of the Term Competence in the Management Sciences

Abstract

The different uses of the term "competence" are analyzed. The origin of the concept is located in recruitment practices, where clear and precise meaning is of importance. The word "competence" has different meanings in education and strategic management. Corporate competence and work competence are analyzed and the differences described. (original abstract)
