The Future of the Polish Pension System

Abstract
The reform of the Polish pension system, introduced in 1999, has not been completed and its effects differ from the intentions of the reformers and expectations of the insured. With the current demographic trends and the economic situation, the present pension system cannot be maintained without huge state funding. This article identifies possibilities of developing the public pension system, taking into account demographic and economic forecasts. The authors also proposes a number of systemic and structural changes that could make it possible to finance the pension scheme in Poland without contributions from the state budget (i.e. from taxpayers).
