Regenerative Tourism — A Conceptual Framework and Implementation Opportunities as Exemplified by Religious Tourism Products

Abstract

The aim of this article is to review the principles and conclusions regarding regenerative tourism, understood as a new conceptual framework proposed in response to the need for more research into the global effects of the growth in tourism demand and supply. The practical objective is to assess opportunities for implementing this form of tourism as exemplified by religious tourism products. By applying qualitative research methods (case study, comparative analysis) to examples from various European countries, the study demonstrates which elements of religious tourism products contain features of regenerative tourism. The added value lies in the authors’ recommendations regarding the inclusion of regenerative elements in the identified examples. The research findings indicate that religious tourism products, when properly designed, provide ample opportunities for incorporating the principles of regenerative tourism. The main theoretical outcome is a definition and a model featuring five elements that ensure a given form of tourism aligns with the principles of regenerative tourism.
