Abstract

In an economic context, the Information Technology (IT) industry may be associated with the crisis that, not so long ago, originated from the so called "Internet bubble". In reality, however, the crisis was not caused by information and communication technologies (ICTs) but due to excessive speculation in stock markets. On the contrary to being associated with the cause, it seems that IT products can be instrumental in mitigating the effects of crises. At the moment, a number of information and communication technology solutions are available that can help companies minimize their operating costs or create an added value, making it possible for them to gain a competitive edge as well as improve and maintain its share of the market. This is illustrated, for example, by ICT tools used to support activities enabling prosumption. This paper describes selected instances of ICT and Web 2.0 technology as instruments that can be deployed at a microeconomic level to help mitigate the effects of recession.(original abstract)
